They are of two types: The spider or crawler based and Human powered search engines or web directories and to both of them should be treated separately for the best results.

TYPES OF SEARCH ENGINES

1. Spider or Crawler: They use automated software program known as spider to visit websites, retrieve their content, and build a database of pages visited.

To be successful with the crawlers and have your site listing optimized, your keywords must be strategically placed in phrases in places such as; Titles, Meta tags, Alt- attributes, Headings, Main visible body text, and Anchor texts. Other factors that can still affect your SEO ranking are XHTML layout, keyword densities, keyword dominance and keyword placement.

Main Features Of The Crawlers

i) The Spider: This is also called the crawler. It visits webpages, reads them and follows the links to other pages of the site. It consistently returns to the site to search for changes every two weeks to four months. If changes are made to your webpages, the spider will find the changes and that could affect the way your site is listed.

ii) The index: This is the catalog where every website found by the spider is stored. Any changes on an existing site (or newly launched websites) the spider finds is updated in the index, though it may take a while for such changes to be added to the index in most scenario.

Therefore, a web site must be crawled to be indexed. This is the major reason you cannot find some sites when you do a search on them with the Search Engines.

iii) Search Software: This automated program goes through millions of sites in the index to search and rank them in the order of their relevance.

2. Human Powered: These are also known as web directories. Human beings do listing here. A short description of your site is submitted to the directory for the editors to write review on. In this type of directory search results searches for only descriptions that match with the submissions you make, and changing of web content have no effect on your listing. But it is important to note that a site with quality content will most likely be reviewed faster than a poor site.

It is recommended that you submit your main page (Home URL) to the human edited directories before submitting to crawlers. You stand the best chance of getting multiple page listings on a directory if your home page is accepted first.A human based directory will not list your website if you do not submit it with them.

Human powdered directories include Yahoo Directory, and Open Directory (Dmoz).

In this section I will talk about internet search engines and the different types and different SEO tools. There are so many different types of free engines. Being able to optimize for all of them is near impossible so just try and stick to a few guidelines.

1. Keywords, This is one of the most important issues when it comes to web search engines because they run off keywords.

2. Content, You must have a lot of keyword targeted content for the search engines to find your site and all of it must be relevant and related to the basic website theme.

3. Meta tags, these days engines try to find pages with the right content and not so much the right meta tags any more but it is still a good idea to optimize your tags.

4. Links, Now there are numerous types of links that the free search engines look for the first one is outgoing links which are links within your website that send the visitor to a related site.

Now the reason search engines mostly Google look for this is because they are trying to involve the human element and they think that the more out going links there are the more info will be available to the visitor.

The next type of link is incoming. Its not necessary to have these for rankings but it will help Google robots spider your site faster. The last type of link is links within you own site and those just help Google robots navigate your site better. So if you just stick to these simple rules you shouldn’t have to buy any SEO tools.
